Dear Parents,

The funeral of Mrs Anne Pendry

Today a large number of staff attended the Requiem Mass for Mrs Pendry, our former Headteacher. It was a deeply moving service that reminded us of the great service that she had given to the Catholic Community in Croydon.

May her soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. X

Miss Klokow

Miss Klokow has announced that this term will be her last at St Mary’s. She is leaving the UK to begin a new part of her life teaching in New Zealand.

Miss Klokow has worked as a teacher at St Mary’s for over twenty years and in that time has contributed so much to lives of generations of children. We thank her for her service and wish her a happy and fulfilling next step in her career.

We will celebrate her service towards the end of term.

Science Museum

On Wednesday the children of Year 4 visited the Science Museum in South Kensington. The visit enriched their current science learning and I understand was a very interesting day.

Thank-you to the parents who helped to supervise the children. Apologies to those parents who volunteered but were not asked to support the children this time – we are blessed with many supportive parents in the school and cannot take everyone each time.

KS2 Testing (SATs) Week

Next week all the children from Year 6 will take the KS2 tests. This is a great opportunity for the children to demonstrate everything that they have learned in their time with us in the Junior School. I am sure they will all make us proud.

Please note that in order to give the children the best chance of success there will be no morning assemblies as a school from Monday to Thursday next week and no shared Liturgy. Instead, the children will be sharing worship in class.

Employment Vacancy

The Trust Governing Board is seeking to appoint a part time teacher for the Junior School from September 2024. Full details are on the schools’ website under the tab ‘Trust Information’ and section ‘Staff Vacancies’. Applications close for this post next Friday, 17th May.

Assemblies and Liturgies

Thank you for the children from Class 3E who led the Liturgy for their parents yesterday. Continuing the focus on Mary in the month of May, it was uplifting to hear the children.

This was the final shared worship with parents for two weeks, as we have KS2 Testing next week. The final class to host will be 5C, who will present an assembly for parents on Thursday 23rd May at 9.30am.

Achievement Certificates

The achievement certificates this week are awarded to Elijah in 3A, All in 3E, Papa in 4D, Cody in 4T, Ryester in 5B, Aran in 5C, Monica in 6G and Jason in 6P. The Head of School’s award goes to John in 4T. The swimmer of the week is Omogbolahan in 6P. The Kindness Award this week goes to Ryan in 5B.

Yours faithfully,

Andrew McDonald

Head of School

Health Advice for parents

Coronavirus

The World Health Organisation now considers the covid pandemic to not be a global health emergency. For advice and support if you suspect someone has covid, please visit:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/covid-19/covid-19-symptoms-and-what-to-do/

When using a test, check that it is a recent one that is set up to detect new strains of the virus.

Group A Strep (streptococci)

Scarlet fever is usually a mild illness, but it is highly infectious. Look out for symptoms in your child, which include a sore throat, headache, and fever, along with a fine, pinkish or red body rash with a sandpapery feel. On darker skin the rash can be more difficult to detect visually but will have a sandpapery feel. Children with these symptoms should not attend school.
